On May 29, 2011, Ethan Jordan McGee made his arrival into the world weighing in at 7lbs, 12oz and 20.5 inches long. It was an eventful day that led to an eventual emergency c-section for his birth. But it was well worth it to see this bundle of joy!
However, six hours after he was born, he was taken to the NICU for the next 14 days. Here is a recap that we sent out to family and friends a week into his stay:
Inspiration:
Our inspiration for writing this update has been the overwhelming support and response to Ethan’s birth announcement. We are so honored by those that have visited to those that have replied via e-mail and called. Many had said they wanted to hear of Ethan’s birth, but the response was amazing and we consider you all to be part of Ethan’s support team. You all will never know how much your thoughts and prayers have meant to us.

Event:
After much thought and consideration we have decided to not go into a lot of detail about the events that sent Ethan to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Other than to say that after a long labor and delivery, Ethan stopped breathing several times six hours after his birth. The next 18 hours Ethan spent in a very unstable condition. These were the toughest hours of our lives.
Improvement:
Once Ethan was stabilized we could visit but were unable to hold him. He had one full day of testing and was very heavily sedated. This sedation lasted almost four days; however even with high power drugs in his system, Ethan still was able to make many improvements. No matter how small the milestone, each one is very important to getting him home. Ethan has fully working functions of all body parts inside and out, he hit his feeding level and is taking part of his food by bottle, opens his blue eyes, and is a little bit of a show off.
Current Status (as of 6/5/11):
Ethan is going to be staying a little longer in the NICU. We don’t know how long but will be proud to let everyone know when his does come home. We truly believe that our time and efforts working with him over the last week has assisted Ethan in his quick improvements. Emily and I have spent up to 8-10 hours a day with Ethan and for that, we want to say thank you to all that have supported us. We also want to apologize to all that have sent e-mails, text messages or called as we have not had a chance to reply. Please know that they have not gone unnoticed.
So, where are we now? (as of today)Ethan has officially been home for a month now, and daddy has been at work for a month too! Mommy has been gradually getting into a routine, even though little E still rules the roost! Ethan has a check with one specialist yesterday and while we were hoping to be taken off meds, it looks like we may stick with them for a little longer. Not a big deal, just one more reminder twice a day of his first two weeks.
E has been busy since arriving home! He has (in a brief recap):
*Been to the Key Club Reception for United Way that daddy sponsored
*Cheered on friends at the Tinman, then attended two picnics that afternoon
*Had newborn pictures taken with Mindy Armstrong
*Started physical therapy to work on extension of my arms and legs
*Taken a trip to KCI to pick up Aunt Jenny
*Slept through the 4th of July activities at Collins Park and the Borjon's
*Been several times to the Breastfeeding Clinic at Stormont
*Had the Chicago McGee's visit
*Spent the morning at the Kansas Children's Discovery Center
*Went to the Fiesta with friends Higgins, Chase, Hadlee and Conner
On July 11, Ethan weighed in over 10lbs and continues to gain at a great rate. He is in the 50% range for height and weight at his one month appointment with Dr. Cotter.
Chris and I didn't really post any pictures to Facebook, etc. so here are a few from his first six weeks!
Until next time!
E
